Researchers from the Low Vision Research Group Inspire at APH Quality of Care Writing Days

On January 23 and 24, four of our researchers participated in the APH Quality of Care Writing Days at the iconic OBA building in Amsterdam. These days were entirely dedicated to improving writing skills and developing an effective writing routine. It was an inspiring experience—both useful and filled with great stories to share!

A Flying Start with Thierry Delatte

The mornings began with an interactive workshop led by Thierry Delatte, an expert in guiding academics to reach their full potential. During these sessions, participants had the opportunity to discuss their writing challenges, such as difficulty getting started or uncertainty about the quality of their work.

Thierry provided practical tips to overcome these obstacles:

  • Start writing immediately: For example, by documenting the methodology while collecting data.
  • Structure your work: Use headings to create a clear overview of your article.
  • Pomodoro technique: Work in focused 25-minute sessions, followed by short breaks.
  • Separate writing from editing: Focus on writing first and refine later.
  • Share drafts early: Seek feedback from colleagues to improve your work.

Our researchers found the Pomodoro technique particularly effective. “It really gave me a sense of focus and control,” said one participant.

Productive Afternoons

After the inspiring morning sessions, participants dedicated their afternoons to working on scientific articles and grant proposals. It was impressive to see how everyone was fully immersed in their projects while remaining open to each other’s input.

A Valuable Keepsake

At the end of the day, each participant received a copy of Academic Writing Support, a book packed with additional tips and strategies for developing a consistent writing routine. This book will undoubtedly become a staple on our researchers’ desks.

Why This Matters

Participating in events like this highlights our group’s commitment to improving both research skills and personal development. Writing high-quality articles is essential to advancing our mission—enhancing the quality of life for people with visual impairments.

With new insights, practical tools, and renewed motivation, our researchers look back on successful days. We are proud of their dedication and look forward to seeing the results in future publications!
