Busra Akyol
Intern
Busra Akyol is a medical student in the final year of her master’s in Medicine. During her studies, she developed a deep passion for geriatric care—a broad and multifaceted field that integrates knowledge from multiple specialties. Since access to additional diagnostic tests is more limited in nursing homes, the art of clinical reasoning and traditional bedside medicine play a crucial role. Beyond the medical complexity of this vulnerable patient group, she is also deeply drawn to the human aspect of geriatric care. She believes that healthcare should align with the individual needs and quality of life of each patient. This requires difficult but invaluable conversations with patients and their loved ones in the context of Advanced Care Planning. She places great importance on providing proper guidance in the final stages of life, a period often marked by fear and uncertainty. To her, geriatric medicine is a field that allows for creativity and autonomy, with a strong focus on a holistic approach. Given the aging population and ongoing workforce shortages, geriatric care is more relevant than ever. She looks forward to dedicating herself as a future physician to this vital yet sometimes underappreciated specialty.
Alongside her clinical ambitions, she is also actively engaged in scientific research. In the coming months, she will focus on the relationship between vision and health literacy in older adults receiving home care. Through this research, she hopes to contribute to strategies that improve the accessibility of health information for visually impaired seniors, enabling them to make independent and well-informed decisions about their health.
